Nuvama Platform Review: What India Traders Get

Nuvama (formerly Edelweiss Broking) gives you local, SEBI-linked access to Indian equities, F&O and INR currency derivatives through a web platform, a mobile app, a terminal and an API. It does not give you an offshore spot forex or CFD account, and the rest of this page explains why in plain terms.

Nuvama Wealth and Investment Limited, previously Edelweiss Broking Limited, is part of Nuvama Wealth Management in India. It presents itself as a securities company offering broking and depository services, and it is regulated in India. This is not a broker without oversight; it is a broker with a specific kind of oversight, aimed at a specific kind of trading, and the fit depends on what you actually want to trade.

Two Separate Markets in India

India has two separate trading worlds, and they do not share a rulebook.

The first is exchange-traded. You buy and sell Indian equities, futures and options, and INR currency pairs such as USD/INR, EUR/INR, GBP/INR and JPY/INR on exchanges recognised by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). NSE, BSE and MSE are the main venues. Your money stays in rupees and settles locally.

The second is offshore spot forex and CFDs, traded with brokers registered outside India. Under the RBI and FEMA framework, residents may trade only INR-based currency pairs plus permitted cross-currency derivatives on SEBI-recognised exchanges. Trading spot forex or CFDs with offshore brokers is not permitted for residents, and remitting money abroad for margin forex trading is not a permitted purpose under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme.

FYI
This is context, not a verdict. The rule tells you which instrument types are open to you legally, and that should shape which broker you pick.
Nuvama sits in the first world. It is a domestic broker built around the Indian market.

Instruments Available

Equity broking, derivatives, and currency segments are confirmed in Nuvama's own materials. Broader Nuvama material also references mutual funds and other wealth products, so the platform doubles as a distribution channel for longer-term products.

SegmentWhat it coversSettlement currency
EquityIndian listed sharesINR
F&OIndex and stock futures and optionsINR
CurrencyINR pairs on recognised exchangesINR
Wealth productsMutual funds and similar, per Nuvama materialINR

Because everything settles in INR on a SEBI-recognised exchange, there is no domestic currency conversion step eating into your returns. The base currency of the India-facing business is the rupee.

Costs

A public Nuvama trading page advertises flat brokerage of ₹20 per order for equity and F&O. That is a per-order model, not a percentage-of-volume model, which changes the maths depending on how you trade.

Your styleWhat ₹20 per order meansWatch for
Occasional investorVery cheap per transactionAnnual maintenance charges
Active intraday traderAdds up fast across many ordersTaxes and exchange fees on top
Options sellerPer-order pricing suits small lotsMargin, not brokerage, is the constraint

The per-order rate is the headline, not the whole bill. Statutory charges, exchange transaction fees, stamp duty and taxes apply on top and are set by regulators and exchanges rather than by the broker. Compare the all-in cost per round trip, not the advertised number.

Nuvama also publishes a Lite Plus plan alongside its standard broking services. Public Nuvama material highlights Lite Plus and dedicated support, but a full public account-type matrix for India is not laid out in the sources reviewed. Ask support directly for the current plan document.

Comparison Criteria That Matter

FeatureWhat to checkWhy it matters
RegulatorNamed regulator, verifiable registrationDetermines your route to a complaint
Client moneySegregated from the firm's own fundsAffects recovery if the firm fails
CostsAll-in per round trip, not headline rateQuietly decides your net return
Instrument accessMatches what you are legally allowed to tradeMismatch wastes weeks of setup
Track recordYears operating, ownership disclosedNew names carry unknown risk

If you are exploring international platforms alongside Nuvama, apply the same five checks. Strong regulation at the level of the FCA, CySEC or ASIC, segregated client funds, transparent fees, a long operating history and support you can actually reach are the criteria that separate a durable broker from a short-lived one.

PRO TIP
Run this test before you deposit: pick one instrument, find its total cost for a full buy and sell, then find the same number elsewhere. If you cannot get a straight answer, that is your answer.

Where the Friction Shows Up

  • Currency pair menu is limited to INR-based pairs and permitted cross-currency derivatives on recognised exchanges.
  • Spot forex and CFDs are outside what residents may trade, so an offshore account is not a legal alternative for that purpose.
  • Public sources do not state leverage for the India-facing business.
  • Funding and withdrawal mechanics are not published in the sources reviewed. Deposit and withdrawal terms need to come from the broker directly.
  • Islamic or swap-free accounts are not publicly confirmed for this business.

On the last three points, the gap is disclosure rather than a red flag. Confirm specifics in writing before you commit capital. Approval timelines for a legal, exchange-linked account usually run around 24 to 48 hours once KYC is complete, and KYC requires a PAN card, Aadhaar, address proof such as a recent utility bill or bank statement, and bank proof like a cancelled cheque.

For context on the wider market: the RBI publishes an Alert List of unauthorised forex trading platforms. As of the 19 November 2025 update it totals 95 entities, and the RBI states the list is not exhaustive. Common patterns include Telegram and WhatsApp signal groups promising fixed monthly returns, cloned broker apps, and platforms that accept deposits then block withdrawals. Recovery-agent follow-on scams are a known second act. This paragraph is about the market around you, not about this broker.

Tax and Money Movement

Tax authority for Indian residents is the Income Tax Department under the CBDT, at incometax.gov.in.

SituationTreatmentCarry-forward
Exchange-traded currency F&O profitNon-speculative business income, slab ratesNon-speculative losses: 8 years
Intraday speculative positionsSpeculative business incomeSpeculative losses: 4 years
Crypto gainsFlat 30% plus 4% cessSeparate treatment

Losses cannot be set off across these buckets freely. Speculative losses offset only speculative income. Non-speculative losses carry forward for eight years, speculative for four. Residents must also declare worldwide income and foreign assets in Schedule FA, and a 20% TCS applies on LRS remittances above ₹10 lakh per financial year, with the threshold raised from ₹7 lakh effective 1 April 2025. TCS is an advance-tax credit, not a tax paid away.

Money movement on a domestic platform is straightforward. UPI, IMPS, NEFT, RTGS and netbanking all work, and exchange trading settles in INR with no domestic FX conversion. Offshore brokers advertising UPI deposits for spot forex sit outside the legal framework.

WARNING
Margin or leveraged forex trading is not a permitted LRS end-use, so funds remitted abroad under LRS cannot legally fund an overseas forex or CFD account. Verify the current position with the RBI LRS FAQ before acting on anything you read online.

Fit

For a newcomer, Nuvama is workable because it keeps you inside the regulated domestic system while you learn. You get rupee settlement, familiar funding rails, and instruments that behave the way Indian market material teaches them.

For someone who has already traded global markets and wants spot forex or CFDs, this platform is not a match. The instrument menu and the legal perimeter both say so. That is a fit question, not a quality judgement.

What separates a good experience from a bad one over a year is whether you picked a broker whose regulation, cost structure and instrument access match your actual plan, and whether you confirmed the terms in writing before funding.

What people usually ask

What platform options does Nuvama offer?

Nuvama states it provides broking through its website, a mobile application, a terminal and API-based trading platforms. Desktop traders get a terminal, mobile-first users get an app, and those automating orders get API access.

Can I use UPI to fund my Nuvama account?

Domestic INR rails including UPI, IMPS, NEFT, RTGS and netbanking are standard for SEBI-recognised exchange trading. Specific deposit and withdrawal terms for your account should be confirmed with Nuvama support, as public sources do not publish them.

Does Nuvama support spot forex and CFD trading?

No. Nuvama operates as an Indian securities firm covering equity, F&O and INR currency segments. Spot forex and CFDs with offshore brokers are not permitted for Indian residents, and LRS cannot be used to fund margin forex trading abroad.
